What is Makaton?
Makaton is a system of communication that uses signs and symbols instead of words. Makaton is a form of communication that can be used alongside or as a replacement for speech. There are three main elements to Makaton: signs which represent words, symbols which represent concepts and gestures. Makaton signs are used with speech in spoken word order. We use Makaton throughout the nursery session as inclusive practice, using signs can help children who have no speech or whose speech is unclear.
