Our World

❄️ Our Snowy Learning ❄️

This term in Nursery we’ve been learning all about snow and icy parts of the world through lots of hands‑on play. The children explored ice 🧊, learning new words like cold, wet, and melting, and enjoyed talking about what they noticed.

We worked together to make ice sculptures using natural materials, then hung them up to watch how they changed as the ice melted. One of our favourite activities was the ice‑melting game, where the children rolled a die to practise number recognition and followed instructions to find different ways to melt the ice – cold, wet, and very fun! 💧

We also made artificial snow ❄️ and used it for mark‑making activities to help develop fine motor skills. It’s been lovely to see the children so curious and engaged while learning through play.

❄️🐻‍❄️ Nursery Learning: Exploring the Arctic 🐧❄️

This term, our Nursery children have been busy learning all about the Arctic through their own ideas and curiosities. Using pupil voice, the children told us they wanted to learn about the animals that live in the Arctic, especially polar bears 🐻‍❄️.

We enjoyed learning a fun polar bear song, and the children discovered that ice caps are melting, helping them begin to understand how we can look after our world 🌍💙. The children loved signing the song using Makaton, supporting communication and inclusion for everyone 🤲🎵.

Through sensory play, the children explored different textures to create their own polar bears, developing imagination and fine motor skills. We also made polar bear masks, encouraging creativity, confidence, and role play 🎭✨.

🌟 Skills We Have Been Developing

  • 🗣️ Listening and communication
  • 🤲 Makaton signing and expressive skills
  • 🎨 Creativity and imagination
  • ✂️ Fine motor skills

The children have shown fantastic curiosity, enthusiasm, and enjoyment throughout this learning experience. Well done, Nursery! 💙❄️

Moving Our Bodies the Arctic Way ❄️⛷️

We have been using our gross motor skills really well this term as part of our ‘Write Dance’ sessions 💃🕺. The children explored big movements, helping to strengthen their bodies and support early writing skills in a fun, active way ✍️✨.

We talked about sports we can do in the snow, and then used our imaginations to create our own! Working with our friends, we made ski tracks on long pieces of paper, taking turns to pull and be pulled along. It was so much fun and full of laughter 😄🎿.

In gymnastics, we added lots of winter fun to our lessons ❄️. The children enjoyed:

  • rolling and sliding 🌀
  • pulling themselves up on benches 💪
  • crawling and moving in different ways 🐾
